Grampa in Oz, published in 1924, is the eighteenth book in the Oz series and the fourth written by Ruth Plumly Thompson, who succeeded L. Frank Baum as the primary author of Oz books. The story is set in the whimsical Land of Oz and centers on the kingdom of Ragbad, which is facing economic collapse due to a failed rag crop and general mismanagement by King Fumbo. The crisis deepens when King Fumbo’s head is blown away by a storm.
The main quest follows Prince Tatters of Ragbad and Grampa, a brave, elderly former soldier (not actually anyone’s grandfather), as they set out to find the king’s lost head, a fortune to save their kingdom, and a princess for Tatters to marry. Along the way, they are joined by Bill, a live iron weathercock from Chicago, and encounter various magical characters and lands, including the flower fairy Urtha and the forgetful poet Percy Vere.
A parallel storyline involves Princess Pretty Good of Perhaps City, who is threatened with marriage to a monster unless she marries within four days. The villainous prophet Abrog kidnaps her, but she transforms into the flower fairy Urtha, adding another layer to the adventure. The story culminates with the restoration of King Fumbo’s head, the saving of Ragbad, and the marriage of Prince Tatters to Princess Pretty Good, with Dorothy and Toto making cameo appearances to help restore order.
As part of the “Famous Forty” Oz books, it is a must-have for collectors and fans of the series, continuing the legacy of Baum’s world of fancy and adventure.
The book features vibrant illustrations by Neill, whose artwork is synonymous with the Oz series.
This edition is highly sought after by collectors & Oz enthusiasts.
