This matched set of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Essays: First Series and Second Series, both published by Phillips, Sampson & Company, Boston, in 1856.
Physical Features
• Bindings: Both volumes feature full leather gilt fine bindings with gilt floral motifs & panel designs on the spines. The edges are decorated with beautiful marbled paper, visible both on the text block and the endpapers.
• Edition/Printings:
• Essays: First Series: Marked as “New Edition” (1856), originally published in 1841. The copyright page shows James Munroe & Company but was reissued by Phillips, Sampson & Company.
• Essays: Second Series: Marked as “Second Edition” (1856), originally published in 1844. Copyright indicates Phillips, Sampson & Co., stereotyped at Boston Stereotype Foundry.
• Condition: Some age-toning & foxing are apparent on the title page, but the gilt fine bindings are strong & visually appealing. The marbled edges & endpapers are well-preserved & enhance the collectible appeal.
• Format: Octavo, typical for mid-19th century American publishers.
