This is a third edition (1870) copy of “The Æneid of Virgil,” translated into English verse by John Conington and published by Longmans, Green, and Co., London.
It features full leather prize binding with gilt Christ Church armorial on the cover, marbled endpapers, and an inscription indicating it was awarded as a prize at Christ’s College, Brecknock in 1871.
John Conington was a celebrated Victorian classical scholar, whose translation of the Aeneid was highly respected for its literate sensitivity & impact on English classical studies.
This particular copy, awarded as a school prize, has an ornate Christ Church binding, & handwritten provenance.
